Bird club visits Mountainlands

Birders of a feather flock together

The sun was still rising when Birdlife Lowveld members visited Mountainlands last Sunday hoping to spot some of the nearly 300 bird species that occur there. This time of the year one can hope to catch a glimpse of Secretary Birds and Denham’s Bustard in the grasslands. There is no shortage of stunning scenery on the reserve and the swirling, early morning mist made for spectacular photographs. Birding was a bit slow at first, but picked up later in the morning as the birders reached different localities. They got a lovely sighting of a Cape Grassbird sitting out in the open and singing away. Last year, Birdlife Lowveld members visited riverine thickets and this year it was grasslands and mountainous terrain. The club is part of Birdlife South Africa, a non-profit organisation dedicated to bird conservation.
